LiveImpact.io Data Ethics & Nonprofit Representation Policy
Last updated: October 2025
At LiveImpact.io, trust and transparency are not features, they’re the foundation.
We built this platform so individuals and organizations can see how everyday actions add up to collective, measurable impact. That requires accurate information, clear consent, and full accountability in how nonprofit data is gathered and displayed.
Where our nonprofit data comes from
We use publicly available data from the IRS Exempt Organizations Business Master File (BMF) and the IRS Form 990 dataset, which are open to everyone.
From these sources, we import only:
• Nonprofit name
• City
• State
• ZIP code
• NTEE category (the IRS classification of the organization’s purpose)
We do not import EINs, revenue data, leadership names, or any financial details. This baseline data ensures that verified 501(c)(3) organizations are discoverable on LiveImpact.io.
How we create our initial list of nonprofits
We are not displaying every record from the IRS Business Master File during our launch.
To ensure a fair and representative starting point, LiveImpact.io begins with publicly available IRS data on U.S. nonprofits and applies a transparent, human-guided selection process.
Our initial dataset includes:
• A random sample of nonprofits from every ZIP code in each state
• A balanced mix of organizations representing every NTEE category
• A combination of national, regional, and local organizations
We use basic AI tools to identify recognizable and active nonprofits, then apply human review to ensure relevance and diversity.
Our seeding model also accounts for geographic diversity, selecting nonprofits from metro, suburban, and rural ZIP codes to provide statewide coverage that reflects real community variety.
As users join and nominate new organizations, the directory expands continuously, keeping the data community-curated, accurate, and inclusive.
What additional information appears on LiveImpact.io
Each nonprofit profile may include:
• The organization’s mission statement
• Its Web site or donation URL
• Its top three current needs
This information is never created or inferred by LiveImpact.io.
It comes directly from: the organization itself, when it provides or confirms the information, or a user nomination, where a LiveImpact.io member submits a nonprofit and provides this information for review.
Our team verifies all submitted content for accuracy before publishing.
If we learn that information is incorrect or outdated, we promptly investigate and update or remove it.
How we use this data
We use nonprofit data solely to:
• Help people discover nonprofits aligned with their interests
• Encourage users to take meaningful action -donate, volunteer, attend events, or advocate - based on the information provided
• Build an accurate, transparent Collective Impact Dashboard that reflects real-world participation across causes
We do not use this data for fundraising on behalf of any organization, nor do we publish donation pages without explicit nonprofit consent.
How nonprofits control their presence (Phase 1)
During our initial rollout, nonprofits do not yet directly manage or edit their LiveImpact.io profiles.
Here’s how control works in this first phase:
• Profiles are created from publicly available IRS data for discoverability only.
• Nonprofits can request edits or updates to their mission statement, website URL, or listed needs at any time by contacting us.
• Nonprofits can also request removal (opt-out) from the LiveImpact.io directory by emailing rick@liveimpact.io.
• We will promptly review, and process all verified requests or corrections.
As the platform evolves, nonprofits will gain self-service control to claim, customize, and manage their profiles directly.
Our long-term goal remains the same: complete control by each nonprofit over its own presence on LiveImpact.io.
How user nominations work
LiveImpact.io users can nominate nonprofits that are not yet active on the platform. When nominating, users can provide:
• The organization’s name, city, state, zip code, and Web site URL
• A brief mission statement
• The top three needs (in their own words or from the organization’s public materials)
Our moderation team reviews all nominations before publication.
If a nominated organization later contacts us, it can edit, replace, or remove any of the submitted information.
This process allows users to help expand the network responsibly, always subject to nonprofit verification.
Our commitment to ethical data use
LiveImpact.io does not sell, rent, or trade data with any third party.
We do not display ads, promote causes algorithmically, or collect hidden platform fees.
Every nonprofit decides how it wishes to appear, or not appear at all.
Innovation in the nonprofit and civic-tech space must start with consent, clarity, and collaboration.
We built LiveImpact.io to prove that’s possible.
